A practice where an agent starts with a low price guide early in the marketing campaign and gradually increases it as the auction date approaches. By the time the guide reflects reality, buyers have already committed time and money to due diligence.
How the noun Step-quoting is used
The agent listed the property at $600,000, bumped the guide to $650,000 two weeks later, then to $700,000 by auction day — classic step-quoting that wasted our inspection money.
